Life is a Beach, Whitehaven Beach

Life is a Beach, Whitehaven Beach

If you are a summer type and a beach hunter like I am then you have Whitehaven Beach, Australia on your bucket list. Proclaimed as the most beautiful beach in the world I had to see it.  I visited the Whitehaven Beach and will tell you the best way to get there, the things to do while you are there and how long to stay, plus answer the question is it worth the trip?

How to get there?

Whitehaven Beach is located pretty remotely and the easiest way to get there is probably by plane to Hamilton Island, a luxury privately owned island or Airlie Beach, a backpackers heaven. However, even from these two locations, you will need to go there by boat as there are no hotels located directly on the Whitehaven Beach.

How long to stay?

It is a timely and costly manoeuvre to arrive to Whitehaven Beach and you will not be able to stay at the beach itself as there are no hotels there. You can, however, have your own yacht, go on a sailing trip, stay at one of the neighbouring luxury resorts on Hamilton Island or stay in the backpackers’ paradise the Airlie beach and just do a day trip to Whitehaven beach and Whitsunday Islands. We did the latter and it was a trip of a lifetime that I can only recommend. Plan for at least a week so you can enjoy this heaven on Earth and unwind after the long journey.

Where to stay?

There are many properties on the Hamilton Island and on Airlie Beach to fit any pocket and taste from backpackers lounges to luxury hotels so the choice is really yours. We booked a 3-day sailing trip and we spent our time on the boat, which was the best way to explore this little paradise on Earth and we stayed 2 nights in Airlie Beach.

What to do at Whitehaven Beach?

Number one activity while in the area because you get to explore the best the region has to offer and have an experience of a lifetime.

Snorkelling and Swimming

You are at a beach paradise so enjoy it. Unfortunately, there was a cyclone some 8 months ago and the Great barriers suffered a lot so you can’t really see the colourful corals and the fishes. We also had rough sea so the level of visibility was low.

Party at Airlie Beach

Airlie beach is the place to go to and stay if you don’t like to isolate yourself during your trip and would like to have some drinks or even a party. There are also plenty of shops, bars and restaurants to enjoy.

Take a Panorama Flight

I would recommend this to everybody in the area because it is really spectacular to see from the above and adds a completely new dimension to your experience. It is hard to describe in words but it is one of the most amazing sights I had the opportunity to witness ( and I have been to places).

Heart Reef and the Great Barrier Reef

Fly over the Heart shaped reef and take your stunning shot! To me, this is a must if you are here because you will take the panorama flight anyway ( read the previous tip) ☺
